Three-Way Outdoor Speaker with Integrated Bass
The KEF BQ9 Three-Way Outdoor Bollard Speaker combines KEF’s renowned Uni-Q technology with a dedicated 200mm long-throw bass driver in one weather-resistant enclosure.
Its three-way design delivers detailed high frequencies, natural midrange and deep, controlled bass without requiring a separately positioned outdoor subwoofer. Wide 130-degree sound coverage and a maximum output of 109dB make the BQ9 suitable for gardens, patios, pool areas and multi-zone outdoor entertainment systems.
With IPX5 weather protection, UV-resistant construction and several installation options, the BQ9 brings genuine high-fidelity performance to permanent outdoor audio installations.
Integrated Three-Way Speaker Design
Unlike a conventional two-way outdoor speaker, the BQ9 uses separate drivers for high, midrange and low frequencies.
Its driver configuration includes:
- 19mm high-frequency driver
- 160mm Uni-Q midrange driver
- 200mm long-throw bass driver
An internal passive crossover directs each part of the audio signal to the appropriate driver. This allows the BQ9 to connect to a compatible conventional amplifier without needing an external active crossover.
The three-way configuration produces a balanced presentation with clear detail, natural vocals and powerful low-frequency extension.
160mm Uni-Q Driver Array
The BQ9 features a 160mm or 6.5-inch Uni-Q driver array engineered specifically for outdoor use.
Uni-Q positions the tweeter at the acoustic centre of the midrange cone. This creates a more coherent acoustic source and enables sound to disperse smoothly across a broad listening area.
The result is a wide, consistent sound field that can be enjoyed as listeners move through the garden or entertaining area, rather than from one narrowly defined position.
Dedicated 200mm Bass Driver
A built-in 200mm or 8-inch long-throw bass driver gives the BQ9 deeper low-frequency performance than a typical standalone outdoor speaker.
The driver’s high-excursion design moves greater volumes of air, helping produce articulate and full-bodied bass in open spaces. Its carefully tuned enclosure controls the driver’s movement and minimises unwanted distortion.
The BQ9 extends down to 27Hz at −10dB, adding convincing weight and impact to music and outdoor entertainment.
Wide 130-Degree Coverage
The BQ9 provides 130 degrees of nominal sound coverage.
Its broad dispersion helps distribute music evenly across outdoor listening areas while reducing the need to direct every speaker towards one precise position. Multiple BQ9 speakers can be positioned throughout a property to create consistent coverage across gardens, patios and pool areas.
For a traditional stereo system, two BQ9 speakers can be assigned to separate left and right channels.
Maximum Output of 109dB
With a rated maximum sound pressure level of 109dB, the BQ9 provides the output required for substantial residential outdoor installations.
Its combination of wide dispersion, integrated bass and high output allows it to reproduce background music clearly while retaining the capacity for more energetic outdoor entertainment.
IPX5-Rated Weather Resistance
The KEF BQ9 carries an IPX5 rating, providing resistance against water jets from any direction.
Its rugged, weather-sealed enclosure helps protect the internal drivers against rain and moisture encountered in permanent outdoor installations.
IPX5 does not make the speaker suitable for immersion. The BQ9 should be installed with suitable drainage and must not be positioned where water can accumulate around its enclosure.
Built for Demanding Outdoor Conditions
The BQ9 is designed to operate across temperatures ranging from −25°C to +70°C.
UV-resistant exterior materials help protect the enclosure against deterioration caused by extended sunlight exposure. The design has also undergone more than 500 hours of salt-spray testing, supporting installation in coastal environments when correctly installed and maintained.
Aluminium Grille and Minimalist Styling
A durable one-piece aluminium grille wraps around the upper section of the speaker.
The grille protects the drivers against outdoor exposure while supporting the BQ9’s broad sound dispersion. Its smooth, contemporary silhouette integrates naturally into landscaped areas without drawing unnecessary attention away from the surrounding architecture.
Ground-Stake and Hard-Surface Installation
The BQ9 supports several outdoor installation methods.

The standard speaker measures 1114mm high, increasing to 1399mm when installed with the ground stake.
