Eversolo DMP-A8 Review: A Step Up in Streaming DACs

Following the remarkable success of the Eversolo DMP-A6, Zidoo the parent company of Eversolo faced a challenge: how to top such a well-received streaming DAC? The DMP-A6 set a high bar with its smooth, intuitive Android-based operating system, impressive sound quality, and exceptional value for its sub-$1400 price tag. Now, Eversolo has introduced the DMP-A8, which aims to elevate the experience to a new level with enhanced performance, build quality, and functionality, priced at $2999

Key Upgrades from the DMP-A6 to the DMP-A8

The DMP-A8 isn't just an incremental upgrade; it represents a significant leap forward in multiple areas:

  1. Analog Preamp with R2R Volume Control: Unlike the DMP-A6, which used digital attenuation via dual ESS DAC chips for volume control, the DMP-A8 introduces a fully balanced analog preamplifier section featuring R2R volume control. This makes it a more comprehensive solution that eliminates the need for an external preamp. The DMP-A8 includes both RCA and XLR inputs, allowing for greater flexibility in connecting external sources.
  2. Improved Power Delivery: The DMP-A8 separates its power supply sections for digital and analog components. The analog sections benefit from a linear power supply with a shielded toroidal transformer, while the digital components use a separate low-noise switch-mode supply. This setup ensures cleaner power delivery, contributing to better overall sound quality.

  3. Advanced DAC and Digital Processing: The DMP-A8 utilises AKM’s flagship "Velvet Sound" DAC architecture, featuring the AK4191EQ for digital filtering and the AK4499EX for digital-to-analog conversion. This dual-chip setup, combined with upgraded op amps and dual Accusilicone Femto clocks, pushes the device into a higher sonic tier compared to its predecessor.

  4. Enhanced Connectivity and Design: The DMP-A8 is housed in a larger case, providing more space for additional connectivity options. It now offers both XLR and RCA analog inputs, as well as six digital inputs, including an eARC-compatible HDMI input for seamless integration with home theatre setups. The USB input has also been switched from USB-C to USB-B for compatibility with more audio equipment. However, the HDMI output has been swapped for a software-configurable I2S over HDMI output, which suits most modern high-end DACs but loses the multi-channel DSD output feature present in the DMP-A6.

  5. Refined User Experience: The DMP-A8 retains all the features of the DMP-A6, such as the 6-inch touchscreen display, robust support for streaming services, an M.2 slot for up to 4TB of internal storage, and full Roon Readiness. It also comes with a remote control bundled in, unlike the DMP-A6, where it was an optional extra.

Listening Impressions

Using the DMP-A8 in various configurations revealed its versatility and high-quality performance. Paired with a pair of Revival Atalante 3 speakers the DMP-A8 delivered a rich, dynamic sound with excellent detail retrieval. It handled complex music like thrash metal and electronic with ease, offering a refined presentation that highlighted the strengths of each genre.

Comparisons with the DMP-A6 revealed that the A8 provides a fuller, more balanced sound, particularly in the low end and midrange. The DMP-A6, while still a strong performer, appeared thinner and brighter by comparison. The DMP-A8's more robust sound signature felt like a more mature and complete realisation of the Eversolo platform.

Beyond the Basics

The DMP-A8 excels when used in more sophisticated setups, such as a transport for external DACs or a DAC for other streamers. Its integrated streaming capabilities proved optimal, making external streaming devices redundant. Its analog preamp section was particularly useful for fine-tuning volume levels with sensitive headphones and high-gain amplifiers, adding flexibility without sacrificing sound quality.

The built-in DSP features, including graphic and parametric EQ, high and low pass filters, and per-speaker delay adjustments, allow for significant customization. These settings are managed by a dedicated 32-bit DSP chip, ensuring higher quality processing than the DMP-A6, which relies on software adjustments.

Final Thoughts

With the DMP-A8, Eversolo has successfully advanced its streaming DAC platform to a new level of performance and functionality. The combination of a high-quality analog preamp, advanced digital processing, robust power delivery, and flexible connectivity options positions the DMP-A8 as a top contender in its price range. It stands as a compelling choice for anyone looking to upgrade their digital audio experience without compromise.
