It is a MusicCast device, controlled with the MusicCast Controller app and able to join other MusicCast products in a multi-room system.

A rear switch sets it to Pre Amp mode, where the WXC-70A controls volume, tone and YPAO room calibration, or Player mode, where it sends a fixed-level signal to an amplifier that handles the volume. Yamaha uses an ESS SABRE ES9039Q2M DAC (384kHz/32-bit) with its DAC on Pure Ground circuit layout, in the same 220mm wide aluminium enclosure as the WXA-70A streaming
